Weight Loss: How About Not Having A Goal?

One of the biggest mistake you can make when you want to lose weight is having an exact weight loss goal.

Why not let your body take you were it wants to go?

Because it’s scary, right?

But if you think about it, it’s the only sane thing you can ever do.

Let’s say you want to lose 50 pounds. How do you know that that’s exactly what you need to lose? What happens if you only manage to lose 48.8 pounds? Will you live in despair for the rest of your life?

What happens if you lose the 50 pounds but now you can only eat 1000 calories to maintain that goal? Will you go hungry forever?

What happens if your body decides to “only” lose 25 pounds because that’s the place it thrives and simply feels alive? Will you hate your body and feel cheated and betrayed?

The truth is that we have no idea how much weight we need to lose. Creating a number in our minds only causes stress and a sense of failure if you don’t achieve your initial goal.

But a number is just a number. It’s a concept created in our minds without any base in our current reality. {Click to Tweet}

Yes, you might have felt incredible at 5 pounds less 20 years ago, but that was then. What if your body needs those 5 pounds to deal with life, stress and work? What if your body just feels it’s working better with 5 pounds more? What if your concept of numbers is all wrong?

It’s only by checking in with the body continuously, learning to trust it, listen to it and honor it that you’ll eventually really know if or how much weight you need to shed and at which weight your body is healthiest, strongest and most beautiful in its own eyes.

So, try to let your body guide you for a while and see where it takes you. You might be surprised at how easy it feels not to be the one in the driver’s seat. Your body’s got this, so let it do its work for now. {Click to Tweet}
